Foulden, Fulden, Fouldoun, Ffulldowne, Fugeldene, Fugeldean (Vally of the birds or fowls), are the various spellings found for the Baroney of Foulden, with one of the earliest mentioned in 1095 as Fulden.

The large farms on the original estate also had Foulden in the name, – Foulden Bastle, Foulden Newton, Foulden Deans, Foulden Hagg, Foulden West Mains, Foulden New Mains and Foulden Hill.
